Hi everyone. Can you hear me OK?
I'm hoping so. My name's Alicia. I'm going to be presenting about new math academics. So thank you for waiting until Six O 5. We were just giving everyone who was registered a chance to sign in. This webinar is open for you to ask any questions that you have. So we're going to talk a lot about the schedule, building schedule, creating, when you get to creating your own schedule, how that process works, how we choose your classes, how you know what you do and don't need and so.
That can bring up a lot of questions. If you have any, feel free to put them in the chat.

Hi, my name is Wes and I am an IRIS Advisor! I will be here to help with questions throughout the presentation :)
We have W here moderating for us. And so he's going to be signed in answering questions as we go along. And then we'll just make sure we get everything answered for you, OK. So like I said, my name is Alicia, I am an IRS advisor and I'm really excited to talk new math academics with you guys. So what we're going to be going over today, like I said, kind of.
The basics. We're going to talk about what an IRS advisor even is. That's kind of helpful to know. We're going to talk about how we register, if test scores really matter, why we're choosing classes. Because sometimes students get put in a class that they're just, you know, it doesn't seem like it fits. And so we want to kind of help explain when a class does or doesn't fit. We're going to talk about how you can change your schedule, what holds are and what you do about them, and then next steps for you to take as we approach the fall semester so.
Here we go. We're going to start with what is Iris?
Wesley Kosel

IRIS website (https://www.coloradomesa.edu/iris/index.html)
So our IRIS mission is wordy, but it's a good one. So we're here to advise, guide and empower students. We want to help you guys all reach your goals, no matter what those are, and we want to provide accurate, individualized support for you. So basically at IRIS, we do academic advising, we do help with financial aid, and we'll have some financial aid webinars open for you guys in June and July as we get closer to actually.
The start of the semester, we also work on student account stuff, so we help students understand their bill and what's posted to their account. And then we do a bunch of other things. We help with academic success, we help with registration, and we help connect students to resources. So the really cool thing about our campus is that we have a ton of resources available to students. The hard thing about that is it's hard to know.
Where to go for stuff. So if you have a question about where you go for something, call Iris.
Reach out to us and we can help you out. So I'm going to go ahead and show you really quickly our IRIS website.
And the best way to navigate to it and don't worry about writing all this down. We're going to send you guys the links for things we talked about here. But if you're on the main CMU website, coloradomesa.edu, you'll just come up here to the top to this getting help tab. And when you come down to this bar across the bottom, it says ask Iris. It never looks like a button. So it's a little tricky, but it is a button. When you click on it, it's going to bring you to this page that has.
And probably one of the most important ones is where you can schedule an appointment or where you can contact us. So we're on the first floor of Woolhiney Hall, one of the oldest buildings on campus, which is pretty cool. We're also available by phone Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 5:00. And then we are available by e-mail as well if you want to come in for appointments. We do take walk in appointments. We also have scheduled appointments, so we're hosting some registration help sessions.

Echo coming through on our end
Which we do every semester. We have different teams that you can schedule with based on your major. And so we're going to go ahead and take a look at the teams and who we are and what we do. So this is Team Black, 4 advisors on Team Black, Lindsey, Bailey, Nicole and Logan. And they help with math and statistics majors, computer science and engineering, all of the social and behavioral sciences and all teacher education.
You'll be assigned once you have a schedule. Oh, an Echo coming through. That's not good.
Did I do anything at all for the echo? Hopefully?
Once you have your schedule created, you'll have an IRIS advisor assigned to you. That advisor is going to be with the major associated with your degree. So this is Team Black. This is Team Gold. We've got Julie, Tammy, Josh and Cole. They handle business, language, literature and mass communication, or LLMC for short because that's a lot of words, theater arts, music, art and design. And then you have my team, Team Mamarone.
Wesley Kosel
06:10:11 PM
Sorry, @Elly! Hopefully the echo is better now
We've got Delaney, Annie, Annie or Anna, Jackie and me, Alicia. So we work with Health Sciences, Biological Sciences.
Physical and environmental sciences and kinesiology. So, umm, we all try to kind of spread out.
Become experts in our different majors so we can help advise as well as we possibly can. We partner with the departments and so we really just try to get you the best information possible. Another thing we want to touch on before we get too much more into it is FERPA, and FERPA is the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. And basically FERPA is really helpful when students are below the age of 18 or haven't gone to college yet because.
It allows parents to help keep track of their students, progress with their education and help kind of keep an eye on things, make sure everything's going well. But once a student turns 18 or enters a post secondary institution like CMU, then the rights of the FERPA Act actually transfer from the parent who's able to access all the information, and they go to the student who's the one that's able to access all the information. So as a student, it is your job to help communicate with your parents about how things are going and what's going on.
And as a parent, you're always welcome to call if you have questions, but just be prepared that we might only be able to give you some kind of general information, but we do our best to kind of share and provide the information that we can.
All right. Next topic, probably the one you guys are here for. How do I register for classes? So this is a little bit of a diagram here. You've got a couple options. So the first thing you're going to do for any incoming freshman is you're going to fill out your new student enrollment form. So hopefully you guys have done that. You have access to it in your application portal.
You also have access on the CMU website, and I'll show you where you can find that at the end so you'll complete your new student enrollment form.
You'll input all the information that you want us to know, right? If you're an athlete, if you have time restrictions, maybe you have sports practice, or maybe you know that you're going to be busy every evening because you volunteer somewhere or have a job. Put those time constraints in there. You can let us know if you have any prior credit that you're bringing from AP concurrent enrollment, or maybe you're taking some online courses somewhere. And then you can also tell us things like.
What classes you're interested in or would like to take. And then you'll also submit your SAT or ACT test scores.
That part gets a little confusing because we are a test optional school, right? Which means that when you're applying the CMU, we don't look at your SAT or ACT test scores to determine whether or not you get admitted, however.
For placement into some of your courses, we are going to require some kind of test score. So ACT SAT or we have one called the Alex if you didn't take your SAT or ACT, so don't panic. If you didn't take those, we have the Alex available as well.
That you can do to get appropriate placement into your classes. And so once we have all that information as scheduled builders, starting this Monday, we are going to be building schedules for incoming freshmen. And it's kind of a fun time because it's like putting puzzles together, trying to help fit everything in to meet your requirements as you come in and get you into the classes that you need to get you started off on a really good footing. So when your schedule comes to you, as soon as it's built, we'll send it out, you'll get an e-mail.
Important things to look for in your e-mail besides the schedule. In the body of your e-mail, you're going to have notes from your schedule builder. Please read those carefully. The notes are really important because they can tell you things like, hey, we want to get you into a math class, but we don't have your test scores yet. Make sure you either take the test or send them in to us, right? They might say, hey, I really.
Wanted to get you into this class. It wasn't quite at a time that fit your schedule, so I put you in at a later time. If that doesn't work, make sure you make a change to your schedule, right? And just kind of letting you know sort of how things went while we were building and letting you know what you may or may not need to change.
And so then once you've read through that, you've looked at your schedule, even if it doesn't look perfect, you're going to accept it. And the reason you're going to accept it is because that is going to allow you, if you need to, to go in and take appropriate next steps or modify your schedule. And then the next thing you do is just get excited to come to CMU in the fall. So pretty fun process, pretty quick and easy.
Alright, so here's where we talk about how test scores matter. And do they? Yes. So they're going to help with course placement, They're going to help you get your prerequisites completed and they're going to help you make progress towards your degree. So when we're talking about course placement.
Math is. I mean, math's kind of a bear, right? I'm not a math person. I don't know if you guys are math people.

Math Pathways & Placement
Wesley Kosel
06:15:34 PM
https://www.coloradomesa.edu/math-stat/math-placement.html
But if you are, that's awesome. If you're not, that's OK We have it. We have a system, right? So if you come to our Mathematics Placement and Pathways website, you can see and let me see if I can make this a little bit bigger that we have it kind of laid out right by major. Hopefully all those pop ups are gone. What kind of math you need? So for a lot of our social and behavioral science programs, our CMU tech programs, our music and language and literature.
Umm, And even some of our Health Science programs, they require Math 110, which is a general college mathematics class. For some of our other programs like business, Health Sciences, Kinesiology, STEM, they require Math 113, which is college algebra. And then we have things like engineering, math majors, which totally makes sense. Some biology programs, one major in particular that all require calculus. And so you can see, like maybe you're coming in and you want to be an engineer, but you're not ready to take calculus right now.
That's OK. The placement test just lets us see where you are right now, and it helps us put you in the class where you're going to be successful, but you're also going to learn something and prepare for the next level. So as you can see, we have some options. If you don't make it right into Math 110, we have a combo class you can add. We have some steps to get you into Math 113, College algebra if you need it. And we have a couple of pathways to get you into Calc if you need it. So this is where the test scores really come in handy. They let us get you where you need to go.
Um, also, and let me see how. OK, well this is where we run into problems because I don't know how to work this, but here we go. Can you guys see the course catalog? I'm hoping so. Hoping it's changed to the right screen. Oh wait, maybe not. Share this tab instead. OK, here we go. That should have fixed it. So cool, we've got it. So this is the course catalog and you can just go on the website and search catalog to get here. If you go programs A-Z. This is a cool way to see every program we offer.
And what level you're looking at? So graduate degrees are going to be like your Masters and pH D's that you get once you have a bachelor's.
And if you come to your bachelors and minors, it's got everything listed alphabetically. And I'm just going to come down to our cellular, molecular and developmental biology major. And so this is the program sheet for this major. It gives you an overview telling you like what the major is, what you can do with it, the skills you'll have when you graduate.
Wesley Kosel
06:18:05 PM
Colorado Mesa University Catalog, 2023-2024 (https://catalog.coloradomesa.edu/)
It shows you the requirements. So you've got some institutional degree requirements. I always say those are like the fine print of getting a degree right. Like you have to have a 2.0 GPA, you've got to have a certain number of credit hours. Usually for a bachelor's it's 120 and it's got those details. In there you have your essential learning requirements. And so these are really handy because every student who gets a bachelor's degree looks at the essential learning requirements and has to take them.
Some majors, they're going to tell you exactly what you need. So for this major, you need English 111 and 112. That's everybody.
This math requirement is calculus, but you can pick whatever history course you want that's on the essential learning list. Any humanities on the list. Everybody needs 2 social behavioral sciences. Everyone needs one Fine Arts. And then for this degree, your natural sciences you fill it with the chemistry is the general chemistries.
You might be wondering, OK, I have a really long list of classes that I need to take, right? Like this list just keeps going and going.
That's a little intimidating. How do I know what to take, right? So if you come back up to the top, here we have the suggested course plan, and this is laid out by the department. It's they're kind of like in a perfect world, if every student came in with no prior credit and they were all coming full time, they all had all their test scores and they were all ready for calculus, right?
This is the the path that they would have you follow. The bio department would have.
A student in this major follow.
So this is how a schedule builder is going to come in and look at your your degree, right, Your request for how many credit hours you want and we're going to build your schedule off of it. So what's really important here is you see for some degrees like this one, you need to have general chemistry one your first semester, general chemistry two your second semester. And that's really important because without those, you can't take organic chemistry one or organic chemistry 2.
Right. So the what you're doing in the first year is setting up a foundation for what you're doing in future semesters. And so that's why we schedule, build and help get you into the classes that we know you need because we really want to make sure you're starting off on the right foot.
Some classes are actually really important that you take early on for your degree later on. So we actually have a lot of business students that you know they're in it for the business stuff. They have a really good business mind.
They're just not that interested in taking college algebra right now, which I totally get. I personally would be happy never taking another math class again, you know?
So they put off their math for too long. And that's unfortunate when that happens, because it actually can delay a student's progress, and it can actually 'cause you, because of prerequisites, to have to add on a semester or two to your degree. So make sure that when you get here, you're reading through your schedule, building notes, you're sending us your test scores.
And if you're making any changes to your your schedule, make sure you check in with an advisor and we can kind of help make sure like, yeah, that's a totally perfect easy change to make. No worries. Or we can say, hey, you might not have thought about this part of it and how this class is important. So we're here to just kind of help you work through what works for you and what doesn't work for you.
All right. I think we're going on degree progress there. So we're going to move on to our next topic, which is why this class.
So how are we building schedules? I touched on it a little bit, right. We're looking at your requirements. We're looking at the course catalog that we just walked through.
We're checking your new student enrollment form to see if you have any prior credit and then we're choosing the classes based on that suggested course plan, but we're also choosing them a couple other ways, so.
I'm going to pull up our lovely sample student account, which is Megan Maverick.
Is. Nope. That's not Megan. That's me.
How do we get Megan? Let's see here.
Technology is not exactly my friend, but we'll figure it out right?
All right, maybe this one's Megan.
No, that's me too. OK, so maybe we won't bring up Megan. We'll bring up mine.
I attended here for my bachelor's degree, so my degree works, has some stuff in it. It's kind of nice. So when you're coming into your mom zone, you are going to go ahead and just take a look at your account, right? Everything on the side here. This will let you know if you have tasks that you need to take care of. Let you see your account, any apps that we have, oh.
There we go. OK, so you're going to come in and look all that stuff on the side here?
Updates are constantly changing up here so that you know kind of what's going on. Campus opportunities you might have, right for different scholarships and stuff. Trending apps are things that are always happening, so you've got your D2L app. D2L is our online learning platform and it is where if you have any online classes, you'll submit all your work and even in person classes a lot of times will have things that you submit through D12.
Degree Works is our degree audit system. It lets you know what you have and haven't done yet. E Pay is where you can manage your bill and we'll talk about that in our financial aid webinars in June and July. So please attend those. They're super helpful. As a student you will have e-mail, so all e-mail communication that's going to come to you guys. I think from now on is going to come to your CMU e-mail, so keep a close eye on that. Make sure you're checking it at least like a 2-3 times a week. Every day is ideal, but if you could do it a couple of times a week.
The register for classes at a general scholarship application, which we'll talk about in that financial aid webinar. If you're interested, you can log into your math zone and fill that out now.
I mean after the webinar, but you know, like now, so let's go ahead and look at degree works. When you pull up degree works, it's going to get, Oh no, let's not look at degree works. OK, I can't pull degree works up on my own. That's that's about me. But what I will tell you is that when you're walking through your degree works, it's going to show you.
It's going to show you at the very top, your name, your 700 number, who your advisor is. So it's going to show you your IRIS advising team and your IRIS advisor and will be assigned to you for your entire first year here at CMU. It's also going to show a faculty advisor that you'll have in your department. So say you want to come to school to become a physical therapist or you want to come to school to become an English teacher.
Right. Your faculty advisor is someone who can help walk you through all of your upper division classes and course planning after your first year and even starting in your second semester. So when you're going through there, it'll have mark for you and it will say, you know Alicia has taken her English 111, but not her English 112. She's taken her math, but she hasn't taken her history yet. And it'll kind of walk through and it'll provide check marks down the page for you.
So hopefully you guys are able to pull up your own degree works kind of take a look if you're transferring credit to us, we'll talk about that here in a second. But it's really important to get that sent over. But the first thing that's most important to do is just acknowledge it in your new student enrollment form for us so that we know to expect it and we know what to avoid registering for you for. So we don't put you in the same class twice.
So, prior credit, there's AP and IB scores, right? AP scores? You send them directly to CMU from collegeboard.org. IB squares get sent to US from ibo.org and then they'll get evaluated and put into your degree works, college credit or concurrent credit?
Any class that you take at a college, whether you're on your high school campus taking the Class A college class with one of your high school teachers, even though you've never set foot, maybe on a college campus, you still have an account with a college and you have actually an official transcript from the college.
A lot of students aren't aware of that because the school helps that everything up and so they don't really have to deal with that side, but if you're taking concurrent classes.
And you send us your high school transcript. That won't really tell us anything about all the concurrent work that you're doing. So make sure that you list that in your new student enrollment form, and then that you order official transcripts from the college that you're taking your classes through and have them sent directly to CMU. That's going to be pretty important for you to get that credit long term.
OK, Next. Can I change my schedule? Yes, absolutely. We are happy to help you make changes. We work really hard to build the schedules and to get them right. But sometimes there are things we just don't know, you know? And sometimes that means you need to make a change. Maybe you say that you're interested in history, but I put you in AUS history class and you're like, yeah, but I just spent a year in high school learning U.S. history.
That's totally fine. Come in. We can change it to a Western civilization class, right? And also fulfill that same credit. So when you're wanting to make a change, please let us know.
Know that we're here and happy to help you do it. Make sure that you take a look at your program sheet for your degree. Compare it to your degree works if you have any prior credit in there. If you don't have prior credit, that's really nice because you also then don't have to worry about taking something twice.
Schedule Builder. You'll sign into it and you can make changes or save a favorite. And so I'm just going to quickly show you from my mom's own.
Where you can find schedule builder and then there are how to videos that will show you how to use it. So if you want to make changes you come to this register for classes app and then you Scroll down and you can log in to Register here and it'll open up the schedule builder for you.
There are videos that show you how to use it and so it's actually pretty, pretty nice and easy to to walk through in a super handy system. So the next thing that you want to do, you can make changes or my preference is save a favorite and then e-mail your advisor or make an appointment with your advisor and we can check your schedule and we can make sure that you're staying on track.
To graduate in good time.

Schedule an appointment with an IRIS Advisor here! (https://www.coloradomesa.edu/iris/schedule-an-appointment.html)
All right. So finally, what are holds? Holds are going to be something on your account that prevents registration. And we have 4 main holds that will prevent registration. And so we're going to kind of walk through these and how you take care of them. So when you go through and you go to your map zone and you open up the Register for Classes app and you click log in to register and you sign into your schedule builder, when you go to register, it's going to have a bright red text at the very top. It's going to say you have holds preventing registration.
And it'll list what those holds are. Most commonly, it's one of these four. Your MI hold means that we need your MMR immunization records. That's a state requirement. Your SN hold means that we need a Social Security Number submission.
Also state, I believe maybe maybe federal, I'm not sure, but something that we have to have.
The Co holds the College Opportunity Fund and so if you're an in state student and you haven't heard about the College Opportunity Fund.
Wesley Kosel
06:30:38 PM
Registration Holds (https://www.coloradomesa.edu/register/holds.html)
It's going to be on your your next steps list and it should be pretty easy to find. It's super easy to fill out and authorize, but the state actually, if you're an in state student will pay a portion of of your tuition for you to come to an in state school. So that's pretty cool. And then finally we have our PB hold which is a compass program participation hold and basically what that hold does is it allows us to have.
Compass holds on our account to meet with our advisor who's just there for like an extra support system.
Each semester to make sure that we're getting into the classes that are required and they're going to help us move forward. And it's just kind of a way for us to check in every semester. So when you're looking at the holes and you see them in that schedule builder, it's going to say click here to raise all of your holds.
You can do it that way. You can also go onto our website and you can search registration holds and it'll bring you to this page and you can scroll through here. And a lot of these aren't going to be relevant to you as a first time freshman coming in.
Um, but you can kind of scroll through and see like, OK, here's where I submit my MMR immunization record. It's an E form. It's super quick and easy. The hardest part is just getting your record. Here's where I can do my Social Security number hold and and on it kind of goes through. So this is a good place for you to come. If you have that PB hold on your account for the Compass program. Just make an appointment with your advisor and we can talk you through any changes that you want to make, right?
Alright, and now we're getting into next steps. We've like breezed through this thing. Thank you guys for hanging in there with me tonight.
What do you do next? So right now you're just waiting a little bit, right? We're going to have schedules coming out starting.
May 15th And so you'll just kind of keep an eye on your schedule.
And we'll get those out as soon as we can. You are going to want to, oops, sorry, they're coming out between April 15th and May 15th. So if you've already done your new student enrollment forms that you did it back when it opened in February, you can expect your schedule. We're going to work through them in the order we received them. So the earlier you turned it in, the quicker hopefully you'll get your schedule, but we're going to try to breeze through all of them as fast as we can.
Read your notes from your schedule builder. Accept your schedule if you want to make any changes to your schedule, just make sure that you resolve your holds first. We won't be able to get around the holds to change registration, so make sure you get them resolved and then.
While the holds getting processed, you can always reach out to your IRS advisor or call Iris and ask about changing your schedule. And then lastly you just go through your next steps for first time freshman checklist and that is going to walk you through everything you need to do to get ready for your first year.
So I've referenced referenced that tech list a couple of times, so now I'm going to actually show it to you.
Wesley Kosel

Next Steps for First-Time Freshmen (https://www.coloradomesa.edu/admitted/next-steps/freshmen.html)
I'm sure the suspense is killing you. So here is the next steps for first time freshman page. So you can always Google Google. You can look it up on the website. It's like Google. It functions very similarly and you can pull up this next steps for first time freshman here. It gives you a pre arrival plan that helps you log into your applicant portal. So for example if you need to make an edit to your new student enrollment form to include prior credit.
Time constraints that you didn't add before. You can do that as long as you're doing it before Monday. We can have that on your account and then you'll come down here. This is going to walk you through registering for classes, sending in scores, confirming your schedule. It's going to walk you through how to apply for housing. It's also got these handy printable buttons. It will walk you through student finances. Here's the College Opportunity Fund button that I talked about for new students. It walks you through creating a budget. Now for this part of the finances, I would wait until you have an official financial aid offer.
And you have a schedule. You won't get a bill until August.
So everything until August is going to be an estimate and sort of theoretical as far as like your bill goes, but when you come and do, hopefully you come and join us and do the financial aid webinar.
We'll walk you through how to create that budget, what your financial aid means, what the different types of aid are and how you can get your bill paid and covered. So attend one of those. But all these steps are on here still. You'll finalize your enrollment, taking care of all these things that we have kind of touched on as far as Holt go.
Submitting proof of Selective Service is no longer required, so that's kind of nice. You can ignore that one.
And then talks about when you get to campus, what are you going to do? Like get your math card, get your textbooks, buy a parking pass, come to your orientation and then basically just have fun after that, right? And enjoy your college experience while also studying hard and getting good grades, so.

What does this mean:Time tickets do not allow registration at this time. Please register within these times: 04/15/2024 07:00 AM - 12/12/2024 11:59 PM
That's the mom and me coming out guys. I'm sorry, I can't help it. So here we go. That covers everything for tonight. I know we haven't had a lot of questions in the chat yet. Hopefully you guys are comfortable with what we walked through. If you do have any questions, feel free to pop them in the chat now. We finished way early, so we're looking pretty good and I can definitely answer some questions. We also have our contact information up here on the screen, so.
Call us anytime, Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 5:00. We are going to be able to answer the phone and answer any kind of quick questions you have, whether it's academics, financial aid, student accounts, or if you're wondering, like, hey, I have a question about my housing, my dorm, but I don't know who to call. Call us, Ask us. We'll get you to the right person.
E-mail is also an option. So we have our iris e-mail iris at coloradomesa.edu. That's going to be, of course, a slightly longer response time than a phone call.
But we try to answer within a day or so and then if you visit us on the first floor of Lowell Hiney Hall, we always have someone at the desk.
Wesley Kosel
06:36:45 PM
@Taylor, this is because we will be building your schedule for you! Starting on 4/15 we will begin building those incoming student schedules. You can expect your schedule to be released sometime between 4/15 and 5/15 if you have already submitted your New Student Enrollment Form
That can help answer some questions and even help you make schedule changes. And then if you're a student, you can schedule an appointment with us with your IRS advisor on our IRIS website like we walked through schedule with your advisor or anyone on your team, and we can help you with any questions you have as you're getting your schedule put together and coming down to CMU for the first time.

@Taylor, you may look at classes and options in the schedule builder, but you won't register yourself this first semester
All right. So I think that's everything for this evening. I think we'll hang out for a couple of minutes and just see if anyone has any other questions come through. And if not, thank you for joining us tonight and enjoy your evening.

Can you remind me of when we can apply for a time to move in?
So Ellie, I see your question about moving times.
What I'm going to recommend to you if you come onto the website, So like I mentioned, the website's kind of like Google, right? So if we are on our next steps for first time freshman page and we come up to our housing situation.
You can look at your housing assignment and your my Housing app and that should also be where you're applying for your.

Res Life https://www.coloradomesa.edu/residence-life/index.html
Move in time. If you're having any trouble with that, though, you can e-mail Res Life at coloradomesa.edu or you can come up to the top here. You can search Res Life and it should bring up Residence Life Staff Calendar, Residence Life at Colorado Mesa. If you click on here, it's going to give you their phone number as well so you can reach out to them pretty quickly.

Thanks, I'm not seeing that form so I'll give them a call.
OK, awesome. A call is always great. All the offices on campus are going to be open Monday through Friday, 8 to 5 Mountain time. So as long as you call anytime during there, I don't think anyone ever closes for lunch or anything, so you should be able to reach someone whenever you call.
Alright, I think we're doing pretty good. So this presentation is going to be sent to you. We're also gonna send you some resources that you can have to kind of get a feel for what we have available on campus and.
